The Study Of Mathematical Modeling Development Based on Realistic Approach as Prototype Learning to Improve Students Mathematical Problem Solving Ability in Differential Equation Subject

Abstract


The process of learning mathematics in higher education have facing challenges to preparing students in superior quality, they must have the mathematical thinking ability, interpersonal skills and adapt skills. The implementation of mathematics in variety of live can be brought into mathematical modeling that can be solved by differential equations pattern. For the example are radioactive substances decay, growing bacterial process in biologic, bank rate in conventional bank and etc. So far, the differential equations are considered difficult subject to understand because it is the analysis material, requires reasoning and solving methods. Many critics addressed to the way of lecturer teach that emphasizes on mastering the concept only. It might work for the short term competence but it is fail in providing students mathematical problems solving ability in long term competence. The presentation of teaching material has not been effective and comprehensive touch the realm of student. This research is development research that modified by 4-D Thiagarajan. there are: define, design, develop, and disseminate. The purpose of research are to develop a valid prototype learning by realistic approach, the effective implementation of prototype, and the practical prototype to improve mathematical problem solving ability in differential equations subject. The result of this research shows that: (1) the prototype of mathematics teaching is valid; (2) the implementation of prototype of mathematics teaching aid through realistic approach is effective to improve mathematical problem-solving ability; (3) the prototype of mathematics teaching is practical. Finally, Implementation prototype can be developed on a larger scale, followed by evaluation and redesign the materials on more complex study and probably applied to other disciplines such as biology, economics, physics, and other fields.
